The P.O.W - 09/02/20 - BLACK WIDOW #1 / WE ONLY FIND THEM WHEN THEY'RE DEAD #1 / HELLBLAZER: RISE AND FALL #1

PICKS OF THE WEEK - Sep, 2nd, 2020:

  • BLACK WIDOW #1: The Avengers’ deadliest member is back in a new ongoing series from Comics’ super star Kelly Thompson and artist Elena Casagrande, just in time as the Black Widow fervor and fandom is about to hit a fever pitch in anticipation of the movie ready to be released in a few months. Natasha is iced out with some Avenger friends and is trying to ease the tension as she hits her mark with a mission that earth’s mightiest heroes aren’t even in on. Thompson does a great job of combining Natasha’s sex appeal with her self-assured skills and confidence taking down thugs while working the room to get the information she needs and complete her job. What Thompson does well is constantly keep you guessing as to where Natasha’s allegiances lie and what she is hiding, even from her closest friends. The stand out for this issue though is Casagrande’s art. She has Joelle Jones sort of vibe with stark outlines to her characters and is off played nicely with Jordie Bellaire’s Colors. The villain reveal at the end is a perfect match-up for Black Widow and opens the series up to a lot of possibilities going forward. For fans of the MCU or Natasha Romanov over the years you won’t want to miss her new series flying off the stands.

  • WE ONLY FIND THEM WHEN THEY’RE DEAD #1: Al Ewing has teamed up with Boom! Studios for a new, original, sci-fi tale with artist Simone Di Meo. The story is pretty straight forward, a group of deep space coroners cruise the cosmos searching for floating dead gods that are mined for their valuable resources and body parts to keep civilization alive. This issue sets up how these sorts of missions are executed and the conflicts and politics that arise in these greedy grave robbings of planetary proportions. Ewing sets up a dark premise with a lot of thought and attention to detail on how the policies and procedures of the ship’s crew do their dirty work; and places a reveal at the end which will certainly take this series and readers into uncharted territory. Ewing must have a bunch of tricks up his sleeve with this one and will be exciting to see how he will play his cards over the next few issues. Di Meo’ s art is frenzied with cool panel design and placement while the real hero of the book, that makes it all come together and pop, is Mariasara Miotti’s coloring. Her use of color contrasts to highlight characters as well as incorporate starscapes into the coloring of the gods really gives the series a shine unlike any other. If you’re a fan of Ewing’s Marvel works, and are looking for something different and new with a heavy sci-fi slant then get on board because this series is about to take you on a wild ride.

  • HELLBLAZER: RISE AND FALL #1: It’s ‘The Boys’ meets ‘The Exorcist’ in this new down and dirty take on our favorite Hellraiser John Constantine. Tom Taylor takes DC’s crude conjurer back to his origins to right some wrongs that seem stem from the first time John ever attempted some mystical mayhem. Darick Robertson is on art duties and does not disappoint as he is the perfect guy to give you all the bloody violence and twisted turns you would expect an artist of his caliber to churn out, and boy does he deliver. Taylor nails Constantine’s voice and no F’s given attitude which keep you turning the page until you see just who he is dealing with by issue’s end. If your idea of fun is exorcising your demons both inside and out then this creative team is whipping up something special to satisfy that nefarious need win satanic style.
