The P.O.W - 10/07/20 - BATMAN #100 / THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #850 / GETTING IT TOGETHER #1

PICKS OF THE WEEK – Oct. 7, 2020:

  • BATMAN #100: The grand finale to Joker War is here and was worth the wait as James Tynion IV and an army of artists take on the meat of the story and few epilogues in a fiery final fight between the dark knight detective and the clown prince of crime. It’s all led to this, with Nightwing back on the team and Oracle in the clock tower, the pieces are set for the Bat clan to take back their city from the rancor and riots unleashed by the Joker and Punchline. Everyone here gets their time to shine and puts into perspective what the mission of Batman is and how that will shape things going forward. Special Shout out though to Jorge Jimenez who does the majority of the book’s art and Tomeu Morey on colors who takes the whole thing to another level, between Joker gas bombs, and fire fights, Morey really makes this book pop and shine with destructive delight. If you’ve been reading up to this point you will not be disappointed by the non-stop action and heart racing pacing of the oversized issue. So pick this up to give Batman a proper send off to the last 100 issues, and here’s to seeing what’s next for the Bat family and foes.

  • THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #850 (49): Peter Parker and friends have hit another Milestone issue as his main title hits 850 with no signs of slowing down. There is a lot of bang for your buck with this book with a compelling main story bringing Norman Osborn out of the darkness as Spider-Man makes one of the hardest choices of his career, a deal with the devil to gain a slight edge over his current foe, Sin-Eater. Also, the Web warriors in the background get some good moments with a highlight on Spider-Gwen and how she fits right in to all of this craziness. Ryan Ottley, Humberto Ramos and Spidey-Vet Mark Bagley, cover the issue’s art as the tensions flare and everything comes crashing down with each passing chapter. But wait, there’s more! After the main course this is a bunch of back up stories from marvel’s best and brightest to flex some muscle and sprinkle in some extra Spidey-charm that helps lighten the mood and remind you why Spider-Man has stood the test of time for almost 60 years and 850 issues. For fans of the web-head this issue is a must buy.

  • GETTING IT TOGETHER #1: Comics’ Sina Grace and Omar Spahi are back with a brand-new number one from Image Comics and it is as timely and tenacious as only they can bring when talking about love, life, music and meaning for a new age take on old tv troupes. It’s like friends meets Queer as folk for the modern era as Jack, our main entry point into the series, is caught in between the breakup of his sister and best friend. While he is playing middle man, Jack’s dealing with some love labors of his own; going on a date and seeing where it will lead, either in tragedy or triumph, but at least a good hook up. Nothing is off limits in this series with Grace and Spahi throwing in some kinks and kookiness to liven things up. Jenny D. Fine and Sina have a super similar style drawing-wise and it’s pretty cool to see them work seamlessly on the art side of this issue, painting San Francisco and its nightlife with spirit and pizzazz. Pick this up if you’re a fan of sitcoms and dramedies with a modern flair and a lot of heart.
