PICKS OF THE WEEK - June 24, 2020
- GREEN LANTERN 80th ANNIVERSARY: This anniversary issue shines bright beyond belief and stands as the best of the oversized birthday issues DC has published this year. Right off the bat, Gary Frank’s astonishing art will allure your eye to keep that page turning with a touching story of the first Green Guardian, Alan Scott and the hits just keep on comin’. Each Lantern gets a highlight in the book and shows off their best qualities of why the ring chose them in the first place. Guy Gardner may actually make you shed a tear and they will keep flowing as you read the late Dennis O’Neil’s final Green lantern/ Green Arrow story. This a must for any fan of the Emerald Knight, past and present, to take a trip down memory lane, or to even introduce anyone to Oa and the rest of the corps as to what makes these characters so cosmically captivating even after all this time.
- POWER RANGERS #50: The kinetic finale to the MMPR’s ‘Necessary Evil’ storyline lives up to the hype with a final showdown flare only the Power Rangers could do. Ryan Parrot spares no expense of hi-ya kicks and tricks to wrap up this story with the Power Rangers, Omega Rangers and an all-out action-packed brawl for the ages. Daniele Di Nicuolo is quick and nimble in making the art of the issue seem like an anime, frenzied and frantic as the titanic teens race to beat the clock saving the Earth and another world all at once. This issue is like a pivotal episode of Dragonball where something finally happens and the fists just start flying. if you’ve been reading since this beginning up to this point the double page cliffhanger will have you slack jawed for more.
- THAT TEXAS BLOOD #1: This premiere issue from newbie Chris Condon and Jacob Philips is a weird little tale they’re beginning to weave about time, death, duty, and terror. If you like Criminal, The Walking Dead, Southern Bastards or Moonshine; you’ll be locked and loaded for a new series to read if monsters and meaning are more your speed. Condon sets up the story with the focus on Joe Coates, an almost retiring but not quite ready Texas Sheriff, wandering around on his 75th birthday browsing about his beat. Of course, everything seems to turn on its head, and our hero is left to clean up a mess that looks to be huge and haunting as a noir-ish ghost story set in the barren landscape of today. Check this out if you got room for doom in your pull.
