PICKS OF THE WEEK - Aug, 12, 2020

  • GREEN LANTERN: EARTH ONE Vol. 2: The long-awaited sequel to 2018’s first volume is finally here and very much worth the wait as the green guardian slings his ring once more to save the galaxy from utter destruction. Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman do a lot of heavy lifting in a short amount of time, catching us up with Hal and the Corps and usher in the arrival of the yellow lanterns and what they bring to the cosmos. Hardman’s art is detailed and stark depicting Earth, space and all the other worldly creatures in between as grounded in reality which adds a gravity to the story for this reimagining of the Corps. This is for fans of the first volume but also for lovers of general Sci-fi as well. Because this book isn’t completely bogged down by the crazy continuity of the mainstream title it offers a lot of explanation and accessibility for those looking to jump right in for a one and done quick read. These takes on the Emerald Knight are like watching the best film adaptation of GL you wish the studios would make. The book encapsulates what is so great about these stories while offering a total revision of what has come before.

  • STAR WARS: DARTH VADER #4: Vader heads back to Naboo and leaves disaster and despair in his wake as writer Greg Pak and artist Raffaele Ienco lead the Sith lord to confront his past as he approaches the final resting place of his only love. This series is on absolute fire, bringing in characters, moments and confrontations from all over the galaxy and continuity. This issue has a bit of everything for fans of Star Wars and comics in general; giant Monsters, amazing action, emotional catharsis and even a few surprises will leave you wanting the next issue immediately. Ienco’s art pulls all this off and more as Vader cuts down anything and everything that stands in the way of his goal. Pak is riding high with this series and you will have high hopes for where he goes after this. This issue is what makes these comics maybe even superior to the films. Don’t believe it? Pick up this issue to see all the Star Wars goodness you’re sadly missing.

  • SEVEN SECRETS #1: Tom Taylor and Daniele Di Nicuolo’s newest series is a mix between James Bond and the Avengers with they burst onto the scene with guns blazing new #1 from Boom Studios. The book follows a secret society protecting the seven secrets of the world that change it for better or worse. Our main characters are keepers of one of these secrets, and when their forbidden love goes too far, tough choices must be made as the course of history is changed forever. Tom Tylor has a lot of cards up his sleeve with this one and lays a lot of groundwork that will keep you on your toes as a reader for what these secrets are and the power they hold in forth coming issues. Di Nicuolo’s art is a kinetic frenzy which dazzles the page with speed and force as the action ramps up with each new turn of the page and plot. This series promises a lot of reveals and secrets to be uncovered, so if you want to learn them all then be sure to pick up this series so it’s secrets can be shared.
