PICKS OF THE WEEK – Nov. 25, 2020:
- THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE #1: Oscar winning filmmaker John Ridley shines a light on an over looked aspect of the DC universe in this charged and enlightening retelling of it’s history through the eyes of Jefferson Pierce, aka Black Lightning, in this new title, hot off of their Black Label line. The book reads more like a novel with pictures than your typical comic book, but what is gained in this story is the insight and machinations of the mind of Pierce and his brand of justice. What Ridley does spectacularly well is get you in the raw emotion and frustration of what Jefferson is feeling, how it leads to the emergence of his electrical abilities and the mirror he holds to the super powers upstanding the status quo throughout the nation. The art by a trio of Giuseppe Camuncoli, Andrea Cucchi, and Jose Villarrubia presents snapshots of history, media and allegory to help drive Ridley’s message home. This issue is intense and necessary by using the medium to talk about racism, accountability and indignation for a society and culture the industry tends to have had rose tinted glasses for. Pick this up to see the other half of the coin for characters and stories we thought we knew so well.

- X OF SWORDS: DESTRUCTION: The grand finale to the 22-part story line Jonathan Hickman, and his marvelous creators and cohorts have cooked up has finally arrived. After a lot whirlwind of preparation, build up, twists and turns the mutants of Krakoa go toe to toe with mutants of Arakko. This one-shot ending issue delivers big on bombastic, fantasy action with mutants, dragons, magic and more as all-out war ripples through multiple dimensions. Showdowns and catharsis are abound as Cyclops and his merry mutants finally take a stand and join the fray. Artist Pepe Larraz and Color artist Marte Garcis really stand out with splash after splash of color and chaos showcasing the ramifications of this fight. If you have been reading this event, this issue will not disappoint and with the pieces set for what comes after, the X world is about to get bigger as Hickman turns the page and ups the ante for the future of the X-Men and the world around them. It is only going to get crazier from here and boy is it worth it.

- KAIJU SCORE #1: This new series from Aftershock combines two great genres, heists and monsters, into one raucous, ridiculous and risky ride that is worth the price of admission. Writer James Patrick has a grand sense of humor, movement and scale as he weaves a strange tale about the unluckiest thief in the world willing to put it all on the line for one last job involving risks and monsters of titanic proportions. Rem Broo’s art is disproportionate in all the best ways making the story play out like some twisted Pixar movie Disney would never have the cojones to pull off. This title might fly, or rather swim, under the radar but hopefully if you nab this one it will be one of the year’s biggest surprises.
